Water loss and soil erosion has become one of the critical environment problems due to human activities, especially in the arid and semiarid regions. These have affected the sustainable development of the regional society and economics. More and more efforts have been done focusing on water and soil conservation.Chayaogou is classified as a small catchment and located at the interlaced region between loess plateau and Erdos plateau, which is an area of dry, windy, hot in the summer and cold in the winter, extreme weather occurred frequently, eco-environmental vulnerability, and critical water loss and soil erosion.GIS and remote sensing techniques were applied in the design and planning of water and soil conservation of the small catchment. One of the advantage of the approach is that the basic information of the catchment could be much accurately quantified into maps and dataset, like land use, topography, vegetation, water loss and soil erosion. As a result of this, model for soil erosion intensity was worked out, which was used to characteristic the natural conditions of the catchment and design and plan the scheme of water and soil conservation. As required, the benefits were analyzed by means of social, economics, and ecosystems.The use of GIS and remote sensing in design and plan of water and soil conservation could greatly overcome some disadvantages. It could be a new approach that is more efficiency, practicable, accurate, and low cost compared with the conventional techniques. The benefit analysis results showed that the water and soil conservation scheme for the small catchment based on the GIS and remote sensing techniques would be more reasonable.
